Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Super cute boots, as always, but the quality of the now Chinese-made boots has plummeted. Leather is so stiff, stitching is uneven, the sole is cut along the sides slightly uneven, the inner heel pad was coming unstitched the first day I wore them. They are now making them quantity over quality. The $120 boots probably cost $4 or less to make. These boots should be sold for $60. I don't see them lasting years the way they used to. Very disappointed to have to treat my docs with such gentle care. Oh, the irony.

I purchased these boots for my boyfriend for Christmas and he has worn them everyday since he opened them. We were surprised to learn that they have a non industrial steel toe. They are awesome boots especially for the price.

I've been wearing Doc Martens for 20 years on and off, different styles, and think they are fantastic. I just recieved mine in the mail and am very happy. They were shipped promplty. Great quality, look sharp in any kind of pants, occasion. I've worn Doc's to weddings even. They look great in a suit. These particular boots are very light, not heavy/clunky, have the thick air ware sole for years of wear, steel capped for when/if you want to kick cans, rocks, tires etc. I'm ex-military so I take proper care of my leather footwear, immediately wipe off mud, salt and polish a few times a year. Thats it. A good quality silicone waterproof spray once in a while, especially before winter and you'll be wearing these for the next 10 years, at least. Maybe even 15-20. A great investment for your feet and they look classic. Plus there are so many styles to choose from these days. Chicks in Doc's look hot, especially wih short skirts.
